IBM started developing what they call the ‘DNA Transistor’ in 2007 and paired up with Roche/454 in 2010 to create a commercial sequencer based on their technology. However, Roche announced in April 2013 that they were pulling out of the collaboration. The DNA Transistor is a solid state nanopore which will use alternating layers of metal and dielectric material to control the rate of passage through the nanopore, one of the biggest challenges of nanopore sequencing. The technology is still in the early stages and no actual sequence has been generated.
