Lightspeed Genomics, formerly Solametrix, is using their sub-pixel optical technology, called Synthetic Aperture Optics, to create sensors which are able to resolve substantially smaller features compared to standard camera systems. They received a grant from the NHGRI in 2009 to apply this technology toward the creation of a next generation sequencing system. They state that the higher resolution optics should allow them to increase throughput, reduce feature size by 4X, and reduce reagent use by 16X.
